And speaking of the views…they are SPECTACULAR…. one could even say jaw-dropping! The flat Pacific Ocean horizon extends from left to right, meeting the Costa Rican coast just 300 metres away from the lodge – you can see and hear the waves! On your right you see the vast expanse of the ocean while on your left is a maze of protected sandbars, islands and mangroves that make up the vast Terraba River delta. This is the longest river in Central America and one of its delta arms enters the ocean ‘front and centre’ of the lodge – the waters of the river meet the power of the Pacific creating very interesting wave patterns that change with the tides. Garza Island straddles the delta and seems just an arm’s reach away.
The Terraba River separates Isla Garza from the mainland. The island offers 17 kilometers of wild, natural and pristine ocean-facing beaches. It is just under 900m from the property and is accessible by a quick water taxi ride from the nearby oceanside settlement. On the riverside you can experience the incredible mangroves and related wildlife in a kayak or boat, touring to photograph numerous species of birds, monkeys, and parrots as well as caimans and possibly crocodiles too!
Once back from your adventures you have the best seat in the house for the nightly crimson sunset show – you can watch the sun descend into the waters of the Pacific while you relax in the pool or sip a mimosa on the deck adjacent to the restaurant!
The hacienda offers 11 rooms, 5 suites in the main building offering “WOW” ocean and sunset views and 6 rooms located in the 3 detached casitas which offer majestic and panoramic mountain vistas. The views are not the only perks of this property – as the land is surrounded by wild and towering rainforests you can expect famous Costa Rican visitors – toucans, parrots, several species of monkeys (they often descend down to the pool area), blue morpho butterflies, hummingbirds, iguanas and countless other jungle animals, birds, and amphibians. And expect daily overflights by the brilliant and noisy scarlet macaws – Garza Island is their sanctuary and they leave every morning, scattering in many directions as they fly towards the hills and shores in search of whatever fruit or nut is in season.
The sounds of the jungle permeate the atmosphere and you must get used to seeing infinite shades of blue in the Pacific Ocean and 50 shades of green in the rainforest that encroaches on the property from every direction. Tropical flowers, orchids and plants offer vivid splashes of colour.
